Bredren City Clan E.P
Words by Mat Taylor
Bredren return with a four track E.P of slick, subterranean dnb that demonstrates their continued progression as producers. City Clan is defined by the understated but ever present menace that seeps through every track like petrol on a city street at night. There are no bad tunes here and the only reason you might consider giving this release a miss is if you aren’t particularly in to the dark, moody and minimal sound that so many of us love. Between the mischievous, demonic growl of Line Art and the bleeping paranoia of City Clan, there’s enough here to keep DJs and punters coming back for more, long after the initial “new tunes” buzz has worn off.
My personal favourite from this release is Hemlock. A classic, greasy roller that will slither its way in to your consciousness and stay there, for days, if you’re anything like me. With a minimal and rolling sound that has similarities to Jubei and some of S.P.Y’s heavier stuff, this is tailor made for the serious heads who love their music deep, sinister and infectious. Bredren have definitely established their sound now and evidently have an ear for quality control, too. If you already know about these Belgian badasses, you’ll probably have this on pre order. If you’re new to these three, then you’re in for a treat.
The City Clan E.P is available from Friday 11th of May.
