Hospital release Apex/Unknown Error’s The Yearning (Super VIP) to raise awareness of mental health issues in music
Words by Mat Taylor
In 2017 Drum and Bass fans around the world were left heartbroken after the tragic death of Rob Dickeson, also known as Apex, Unknown Error and his techno alias, Robert Oaks. To celebrate his incredible contribution to our music, Hospital records are releasing a super VIP version of the heartfelt, timeless anthem, the Yearning, plus the laid back and mellow track Echoes.
As mental health issues gain more media coverage every day, attitudes are slowly beginning to change. This release will see all proceeds go to Help Musicians UK in support of their Music Minds Matter campaign. If you read the music press you’ll have seen more and more established DJs opening up about their problems with conditions like depression, anxiety, substance abuse and addiction. As somebody who has suffered from depression and anxiety for most of my adult life, I fully support this kind of initiative. I’ve also lost a friend to suicide and understand the feelings of frustration, guilt and deep sadness that surround such tragedies.
For a lot of people, music is an escape from negative feelings or experiences and this is definitely true of many of Apex’s fans. Browsing the forums and message boards for a few minutes will show you just how much his music meant to people and how much he will be missed. Thankfully his legacy of unique, diverese music is still available and sounds as fresh and original now as it did when he first produced it. This is a must have release that will raise money for a great cause and I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I’d like to see more of this kind of action within drum and bass.
Katarina, Apex’s partner said:
“I hope that this record will raise awareness that help is out there. If you, or someone you love, finds themself in a situation where life just seems impossible, don’t forget that you are not alone, and that there is help.”
If you feel like you need to talk to somebody about your mental health, please do everything you can to seek help. Now that attitudes are changing, support is available. Things still need to improve dramatically, though, which is why campaigns like this are so important. No matter who you are, where you live or what you do, the chances are that you or somebody you know will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives.

Having played Apex/Unknown Error’s tunes out and about over the years, I know the kind of reaction they can create on a dancefloor. Do yourself a favour and play this one as loud as you possibly can to celebrate the life and work of a legend.
The VIP version of the yearning is exclusive to the limited edition vinyl so you’ll need to be quick if you want one. The release is available directly from Hospital, plus selected record shops from the 20th of April 2018.
